AEI Practical Nursing Students: First Experiences with Clinical Placement
A Multi‑Site Start to Experiential Learning
This semester, AEI learners stepped into placements at:
- Paramed Home Health Care
- St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital
- West Nipissing General Hospital
- North Bay Regional Health Centre
These partnerships ensure that students at both the Nipissing and Munsee‑Delaware campuses gain access to a range of care environments from hospitals to community‑based home health care, supporting a well‑rounded introduction to the nursing profession.
Hands‑On Learning From Day One
For many students, the first day brought a blend of nerves, excitement, and a strong sense of readiness.
— Emma Beck, PN Student from Nipissing Campus
Emma shared that she performed vital signs, assisted with morning care, and used mobility equipment alongside PSWs, noting that AEI’s preparation helped her feel confident from the outset.
Support That Builds Confidence

The guidance of AEI clinical instructors plays a central role in easing the transition into placement. Many students highlighted the value of having supportive educators and welcoming on‑site staff.
— Shelley Commanda, PN Student from Nipissing Campus
Shelley also noted that the manageable two‑day‑per‑week structure supports strong learning without overwhelming students during their early experiences.
Developing Foundational Nursing Skills

Early reflections from students point to several key skills strengthened during the first weeks of placement:
- Direct and personal care
- Communication with residents, families, and staff
- Teamwork within interprofessional care teams
- Time management
- Clinical decision‑making
- Building therapeutic relationships
Students shared that hands‑on learning reinforced their desire to continue in the field and increased their confidence in their role as emerging nurses.
More Stories to Come
AEI’s PN program spans two campuses, and additional student perspectives will be added as they become available. These experiences together provide a full and inspiring picture of how AEI learners grow into their roles as helpers and future health professionals.
