Finding Strength Through Support: Samantha’s Journey in Practical Nursing
For Samantha Brochu, becoming a nurse was never just about earning a credential. It was about building on years of experience caring for others and answering a calling she has felt throughout her career.
A Personal Support Worker since 2016, Samantha worked with individuals facing complex medical needs, rehabilitation challenges, and long-term health conditions. Through those experiences, she discovered a passion for helping others and knew she wanted to deepen her knowledge and skills through nursing.
“Nursing felt like the natural next step,” she said.
Returning to school, however, came with significant challenges. As a mature student, mother, and primary caregiver within her family, Samantha balanced classes, clinical placements, financial pressures, and family responsibilities while working toward her goal.
Despite the demands of the program, she remained focused on the reason she started.
“My journey through the program has reinforced that nursing is where I am meant to be,” she said. “Every challenge, clinical experience, and learning opportunity has strengthened my commitment to caring for others and making a difference in my community.”
Supported Through Life’s Challenges
During her time in the Practical Nursing Program at Anishinabek Educational Institute’s Munsee-Delaware Campus, Samantha experienced some of the most difficult personal challenges of her life.
While completing one of the busiest semesters of the program, she helped care for her grandfather during the final months of his life. For approximately three months, she supported him both in hospital and through comfort care at home while continuing with classes, labs, assignments, and clinical placements.
“There were times I would be at the hospital all night, go home, sleep for two hours, and then return to school,” Samantha recalled.
At the same time, she was raising her son, supporting her family, and navigating financial pressures as a student.
Throughout this period, the support she received from AEI’s faculty, staff, and fellow students made a lasting impact.
“Their encouragement, understanding, and compassion helped me continue moving forward when life felt overwhelming,” she said.
According to Samantha, that support extended beyond the classroom.
“Whether it was a kind conversation, understanding during difficult circumstances, small bursaries, food supports during holiday weekends, or simply knowing someone cared, those gestures made a meaningful difference.”
She also found comfort in the welcoming environment at the Munsee Campus.
“There were times when I would sit outside between classes to reflect, grieve, and gather myself before returning to class,” she said. “If Andrea or another staff member saw me, they would always offer a hug or kind words. It felt like a place where students were allowed to be human while still working toward their goals.”
Motivation Close to Home
When the challenges of balancing school, family responsibilities, and clinical placements became overwhelming, Samantha found inspiration in her biggest supporter: her son.
“There were many nights spent studying after long days of classes, clinical placements, and family responsibilities when I felt exhausted and questioned whether I could keep going,” she said.
“The simple words, ‘You’ve got this, Mommy,’ after hours of studying meant more than he will ever know.”
His encouragement reminded her why she began the journey and motivated her to keep pursuing her goal of becoming a nurse.
Growing as a Student and Future Nurse
Looking back, Samantha sees tremendous growth both personally and professionally.
The demands of nursing school, combined with caring for family members during difficult times, strengthened her resilience, adaptability, and compassion.
“Balancing family responsibilities, financial pressures, and the demands of nursing school taught me perseverance and empathy,” she said. “These lessons will help me provide patient-centered care and support others through difficult situations in my future nursing career.”
She also credits AEI’s instructors with helping prepare her for the realities of nursing practice.
“My teachers are very knowledgeable and bring real-life nursing into the classroom,” she said. “I truly believe that’s what makes a better nurse.”
Looking Ahead
Now entering Semester 5 of the Practical Nursing Program, Samantha is proud of how far she has come.
In a recent letter to AEI, she reflected on the support she received throughout her educational journey.
“Reaching Semester 5 represents an important milestone in my academic journey,” she wrote. “I am proud of my progress and appreciative of the environment that has supported both my academic development and resilience throughout my studies.”
After graduation, Samantha hopes to continue working in a hospital setting, further developing her nursing skills while providing compassionate, high-quality care.
“My goal is to advocate for patients and families, support people during difficult moments in their lives, and make a positive impact within my community through safe, respectful, and patient-centered care,” she said.
For Samantha, nursing is more than a profession. It is a continuation of a lifelong commitment to caring for others.
And thanks to her determination, resilience, and the support of those around her, she is well on her way to making that difference.
