Strengthening Program Development at AEI
The Anishinabek Educational Institute (AEI) is continuing to grow and strengthen its program offerings through the dedicated work of its Program Development team.
This work is led by Melanie Miller, AEI’s Interim Quality Assurance Manager, alongside Nicholas Esposto, Program Development Coordinator. Together, they are advancing initiatives that support innovative, culturally grounded education pathways for Anishinabek learners.
Melanie Miller, a member of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, is also an AEI alumna (Native Community Worker: Traditional Healing Methods, 2019). Her journey reflects the strength of AEI graduates and the impact of Indigenous education. Since joining AEI in 2024, she has played a key role in program development and institutional growth, and her recent appointment to Interim Quality Assurance Manager marks an exciting step forward for both her and the organization.
Working alongside her, Nicholas Esposto brings strong academic and professional experience in program development, teaching, and research. Together, this team is focused on ensuring AEI programs are responsive, relevant, and rooted in community priorities.
Current program initiatives include the development of new and evolving offerings such as:
- Anishinaabemowin Diploma
- Child Care Management Post-Graduate Certificate
- Community Development Worker Diploma
- Community Resource Worker Post-Graduate Certificate
- Micro-credentials in Wound and Foot Assessment
These initiatives also support expanded pathways for learners, including streamlined opportunities for graduates of programs such as Native Community Worker to further their education and professional credentials.
A key part of this work is community engagement. AEI has been connecting with Anishinabek Nation communities across the Southwest, Southeast, Lake Huron, and Northern Superior regions to gather feedback, insights, and guidance. This input ensures that programs reflect real community needs and priorities.
As this work moves forward, AEI is inviting community members to take part in Program Development Advisory Committees. These committees play an essential role in guiding program design, strengthening cultural relevance, and supporting meaningful education pathways for future learners.
AEI is currently seeking voices with experience, interest, or lived knowledge in the following areas:
- Childcare Management
- Anishinaabemowin
- Community Development Worker
- Community Resource Worker (Exceptionalities)
- Foot/Wound/Skin Care
Lived experience is highly valued, and participation is an opportunity to help shape programs that will benefit communities for generations to come.
