Student Wellness Programming

At the AEI, we believe that student success is deeply connected to wellness. That’s why we offer a variety of student wellness activities throughout the academic year that are open to all learners and designed to support well-being in a holistic way.

Rooted in the teachings of the medicine wheel, our programming nurtures the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of wellness. Activities may include:

  • Physical wellness: Join us for yoga sessions and other movement-based activities to stay active and energized.
  • Spiritual wellness: Participate in meaningful cultural practices like making medicine bears, connecting with tradition and spirit.
  • Emotional wellness: Enjoy “Tea with Gokomis,” a warm and welcoming space to share stories and conversation with our on-campus grandmothers.
  • Mental wellness: Tap into your creativity through painting, sewing, beading, and other crafts that promote mindfulness and mental health.

Whether you’re looking to recharge, connect with others, or explore new ways to care for yourself, our wellness programming is here to support you. We encourage all AEI students to take part. Your well-being matters.

Cultural Support

At AEI, cultural support is a vital part of our commitment to student success. Our on-campus Gokomisak (Grandmothers) offer compassionate guidance and are deeply invested in your journey academically, emotionally, and spiritually.

You’ll often find our Gokomisak present in classes, especially those that explore sensitive or complex topics. Their presence brings warmth, wisdom, and cultural grounding to the learning environment. They’re here to listen, support, and help you navigate your studies with confidence.

Support doesn’t stop in the classroom. Some of our Gokomisak are also available through our Student Support Line, a dedicated phone number shared with you at the start of each semester by our Student Wellness Coordinator. Whether you need someone to talk to or a moment of encouragement, this line connects you directly to a Gokomis.

You can also connect with them during Tea with Gokomis, a relaxed group gathering where stories, laughter, and support are shared over tea. Our Gokomisak frequently lead activities in our Student Wellness Programming and other AEI events, bringing cultural knowledge and heart to everything they do.

At AEI, our Gokomisak are more than mentors, they’re your champions. They’re proud of your achievements and honoured to walk alongside you on your educational path.

Information About Programs

All programs offered at the Anishinabek Educational Institute are full-time programs. Our programs are not only designed to reduce the high stress levels which develop when students are away from their family, community, and workplace responsibilities, but are also designed to enable students to retain their jobs while being trained.

Delivery Options

Community Based

Community based delivery programs can either be delivered as on-campus or combination delivery.

Combination Delivery

Students are required to attend intensive two week in-class sessions twice per semester alternating with a five to six week return to their community while still maintaining a full-time program workload.

On-Campus Delivery

Programs are delivered at one of our campuses or at a partnering community. On-campus delivery requires students to participate in-class on a full-time daily basis during each semester.
